Why is Hydration So Important?

Water is required for every function in the body, including the maintenance of temperature, waste removal and the lubrication and cushioning of joins. Water is 83% of the blood that flows through our bodies, delivering nutrients and oxygen throughout. Water assists in converting food into energy. Three quarters of our brain is made up of water. Water even assists in our breathing process. This is why it is important to keep hydrated. The human body in its entirety is approximately 50-75% water. Obesity decreases the percentage of water in the body because fatty tissue contains less water.

So what happens when you do not have enough water in your body? Dehydration symptoms are noticeable after only 2% of the body’s normal water volume is lost. Thirst, headaches, possible the loss of appetite and dry skin are signs that you may be dehydrated. This can also be followed by constipation, flushing, low endurance, elevated body temperatures, rapid heart rates and fatigue can follow.

The more water you lose, the more severe the symptoms can get. Urine becomes dark or decreased. You can experince tiredness, fatigue, lack of tears, headache and dry mouth accompanied by dizziness, confusion, sleepiness, irritability and sometimes seizures, fainting and sunken eyes. The body tries to conserve water by shutting down processes like tear production and reroutes water to the most important portions of your body, causing discomfort and the inability to function normally.

In severe cases dehydration can affect respiration and a causes a decreased heart rate in compensation in decreased blood plasma volume.  As little as 5% water loss can cause nausea and a tingling in ones limbs. At 10-15% fluid loss muscles can become spastic and skin will shrivel or wrinkle, vision will dim and delirium often sets in. Fluid loss over 15% can be fatal.

How Do We Lose Water in our Bodies?

Water loss can happen any number of ways, including breathing. But the most common ways we lose significant amounts are from exercise; activity and sweating without adequate intake of water, or prolonged exposure to dry air as in high flying airplanes or improperly air conditioned buildings. Hydration is especially important for infants, breastfeeding or pregnant women and the elderly, as they lose water more easily than other healthy adults.

What is the Best Way to Stay Hydrated?

The best way to stay hydrated is to drink water – the cleaner and purer the better. You don’t want to be adding toxins to your body when you’re trying to hydrate your body for better performance.  Tea and coffee are considered diuretic, which increases the excretion of water from the body due to the caffeine in them, so it is better to replace water loss by drinking water. Experts recommend drinking six to eight 8oz glasses of water a day to stay properly hydrated. Staying hydrated will improve your mood, reduce headaches, help eliminate toxins in your body and may in fact help you lose weight especially if you are maintaining a healthy exercise regimen. A properly hydrated body hurts less, as the joints are properly cushioned during high impact exercise and improves mobility in those who suffer from joint related diseases like arthritis.
