Bottled Water: Really Not That Great (And Neither Is Tap Water)

Water Bottles

There are already too many of them…

Many people simply walk into a store, grab any bottle of water they see on the shelf, purchase, and drink it without a second thought of what this is doing to the environment, or themselves. Water is simple (there’s just one ingredient), healthy, natural, pure, and overall better for you right? Well, that is what most of us thought when bottles of water started filling up store shelves, but things aren’t as simple as they seem.

Just What Exactly Is Bottled Water?

Bottled water has many different labels such as mineral water, spring water, mountain spring water, natural spring water, smartwater, sparkling water, and many others. But why do they all have different names if water is just, well, water? Well, bottled water companies are battling for the perfect label. Why buy just spring water, when you can get natural spring water?  In the end, though,  it’s all the same regardless of the source and its packaging. And what does “naturally” mean when it comes to water, anyway? Well most of the time it means “water from the tap” – the same water you get in your home, much more cheaply.

Is Bottled Water Safer Than Tap Water?

Many believe bottled water is healthier and safer than tap water, as it has been filtered or purified more than tap water. This may be true for some, but most isn’t filtered more than what already comes from your taps. Unless the bottle says on the packaging somewhere that they used reverse osmosis, chances are it’s tap water, sold to you at a large profit. Bottled water’s reputation is similarly misleading when it is believed to be rid of contaminants like chlorine and fluoride, but, if you actually read the label, you will find that the majority of bottled water actually has fluoride added. In a recent study done by the Environmental Working Group, 173 different brands of bottled water were tested and graded on a scale of A through F. Out of those 173, 0 came out with an A grade, and only 3 made the grade of B, and over half of them received an F. (http://www.ewg.org/research/ewg-bottled-water-scorecard-2011) The only water to come out with an A grade, is your tap water, which most of you don’t trust already, and it’s better than the bottled water you are buying which is more expensive than gas. And to add it, the bottled water industry very loosely regulated. They can pretty much get away with putting anything in the water they want, as where tap water is regularly and closely monitored and regulated.

Bottled Water And The Environment

And then there is the impact that bottled water companies have on the environment. Making all of these bottled requires over a million barrels of oil, which in turn contributes greatly to carbon emissions. Then there more oil is used for the transportation of these bottles. Everyone already knows how bad plastic is for our environment – over 90% of the plastic bottles end up in either landfills, waterways, or our oceans, and never biodegrade.

And so, bottled water is not such a wise choice. But tap water isn’t either. Most tap water contaminations are not disclosed to the public until a solution can be found to fix the problem.  Then there are the standard levels of chlorine, and fluoride, which are generally higher than what the EPA recommends. And when chlorine is added to the water, it reacts with organic matter to create a compound called THM’s or trihalomethanes which are proven to be carcinogenic. And these are just two common additives allowed by the EPA. There are hundreds of toxins and contaminants in your water, most of which the EPA and other agencies aren’t testing for, such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, jet fuel, and radiation. Because our understanding of the effects of many of these toxins is limited, their levels may be monitored but not disclosed. We are unsure of what the effects on the body could be, and the levels continue to rise.

What’s Safe To Drink?

So, if you are hesitant to drink your tap water, thinking it may be unsafe and full of toxins, you’re right to be. And bottled water isn’t the answer either. If you want to drink pure, healthy water, you need a water purification system such as a reverse osmosis system. Reverse osmosis is the only solution available which can truly deliver the quality of water you can surely trust and is made reliable and extremely affordable by Aquasafe Systems.
